Before You Get Started

Check your local city and/or county zoning laws to ensure that a livestock slaughter and/or meat processing business is permitted in the area you’re considering.

You must comply with all other federal, state, and local laws, rules, and ordinances, whether or not they’re administered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Site Size

The site must be large enough to allow for all buildings, parking lots, access roads, and future expansion.

The site must be large enough to accommodate both:

  • A potable water supply for your processing needs.

  • A sewage system that can efficiently handle liquid waste and process water created by your business.

Site Location

Avoid building next to

  • Industries that attract vermin. For example: landfills and junk yards.

  • Industries that create odors and airborne particles. For example: oil refineries, trash dumps, chemical plants, sewage disposal plants, and paper mills.
