Atlanta, Ga – Today, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J Harper issued the below statement praising USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins’ 5-point plan to combat avian influenza and lower egg prices for the American consumers.
“I want to thank Secretary Rollins for delivering a comprehensive plan to invest over $1 billion to address the nationwide Avian Influenza outbreak and bring egg prices down for American consumers. While Georgia remains a model for the nation on HPAI prevention, consumers in our state are feeling the impact of AI across the country, and Secretary Rollins’ plan is a strong step in the right direction to lower egg prices for the American people.”
The current, nationwide H5N1 Avian Influenza outbreak began on February 8, 2022. To date, more than 166 million birds nationwide have been impacted according to the USDA. Of the 166,000,000+ million birds impacted nationwide, only approximately 210,000 have been in the State of Georgia – the nation’s #1 poultry producing state. The state of Georgia’s success in AI prevention is because of the close coordination between the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Poultry Producers, and Animal Health Professionals in Georgia.
