Nationwide recall of Santa Barbara Smokehouse Cold Smoked Salmon due to potential health risk

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of certain packaged smoked salmon products, sold in Georgia, for potential health risk to consumers. Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) inspectors will be checking retail stores and warehouses to make sure the recalled products have been removed from sale. Here is the recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

Santa Barbara Smokehouse announced it is voluntarily recalling all Smoked Salmon, excluding Hot Smoked Salmon, from Mar. 1 through April 8, 2015, due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The Cold Smoked Salmon was distributed within the U.S. through retail stores and food wholesalers. The following brands affected in the recall include: Cambridge House, Coastal Harbor, Harbor Point, North Shore S.F. Specialty, Channel Islands and Santa Barbara, with a batch range of 1015 – 3949.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, there have been no reports indicating that these products have caused any illness.

All products have use by dates of April 29 to May 6, 2015. The company has recommended, as a precautionary measure, to pull frozen product produced on or before April 8, 2015.

Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged not to eat the products, and dispose of, or return, the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. If any of the products listed above are still in possession, do not consume and contact Santa Barbara Smokehouse for pick up. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-805-966-9796.
