Mut Gung Sweetened Ginger recalled for undeclared sulfites

Friday, September 19, 2008

Tommy Irvin, Georgia agriculture commissioner, is alerting consumers to some clear plastic containers of ginger that may contain sulfites.

K-FAT, INC., 13 Meadow Street, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11206, is recalling its 150-gram packages of Mut Gung Sweetened Ginger that was distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail-orders.  The product was recalled because it contains sulfites not listed on the label.

People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume the product.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling and laboratory testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the product contained 94.5 milligrams per serving.  Consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics.  Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite-sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.

“Georgia Department of Agriculture sanitarians will be checking grocery stores and food warehouses to make sure that this product is removed from sale,” said Commissioner Irvin.
