Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin visited the Macon Farmers Market early Monday morning to inspect damage from Sunday’s storm.
“We are fortunate there is not more structural damage,” said Commissioner Irvin.
“There is a lot of superficial damage and several buildings have holes in the roof. All outdoor vendors sustained losses including Backyard Basics, produce dealers and four plant vendors that were fully stocked for spring planting,” said Irvin.
There is no estimate yet on the cost of the damage.
Electricity and telephone service have not been restored to the market. Most businesses at the market such as Modern Grocery, the Georgia tag office and the restaurants will not be able to re-open until then. Generators have been brought in to protect refrigerated items until the electricity is back on.
“We hope that some of the businesses will be able to re-open on Tuesday,” said Irvin.
