Specialized infant formula recalled

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is alerting consumers to the recall of one lot of a specialized infant formula usually given to infants in the care of a health care professional because the formula lacks the amount of protein shown on the label.

Nutricia North America, Inc. has recalled and is replacing Lot P91877 of Neocate® Infant Specialized Formula.  Neocate® is a hypoallergenic dry powder formula packaged in 14-ounce cans distributed to pharmacies, health care professionals and consumers nationwide.  It is not intended for general use and is usually given to infants in the care of health care professionals.  The affected cans were distributed between September 1 and September 11, 2009.

The lower protein levels in the affected cans were due to a one-time blending error, Nutricia says it learned from the manufacturer.  Although the protein level did not meet the U.S. infant formula minimum requirement, it does meet the minimum requirement of the World Health Organization.

Parents, care givers, and health care professionals who have questions or concerns related to the consumption of the product are advised to contact the Nutricia North American Customer Helpline at 1-800-365-7354, option 8-6061.  The company extended the regular helpline hours through 8 p.m. EDT Tuesday, September 29.  The helpline is available 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
