Ballard’s recalls three more salads for possible Listeria monocytogenes

The company that recalled egg salad last week due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes has added three more kinds of salads to the recall, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin announced today.

Ballard’s Farm Sausage, Inc., Wayne, WV, now has recalled all lots of Ballard’s Farm 24 oz. Amish Macaroni salad, Ballard’s Farm 24 oz. Amish Sweet Slaw, Ballard’s Farm 12 oz. Cole Slaw, and Food City 12 oz. Cole Slaw also because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

The products recalled last week were Ballard’s 12 oz. egg salad, Food City 12 oz. egg salad, and Valu Time 11 oz. egg salad.  The egg salads had a “Best if used by 11/7/06” date code on the side.  All of the salads are in clear plastic cups with the product name displayed on the side of the lid and the side of the cup.

“Please check your refrigerators for these salads, and if you have any, please return all of these items to where you purchased them for a full refund,” Commissioner Irvin said.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.  Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

In addition to West Virginia and Georgia, the products were distributed in several states, including Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
