Chicken and tuna salad sandwiches recalled
by Tenn. pre-packaged snack food company
More than 27,000 pre-packed chicken and tuna salad sandwiches are part of a multi-state recall, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said today. Potential harmful bacteria growing on the celery has prompted the action.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports no illness “to date” have been recorded in the 15 states affected by the recall.
The Made-Rite Sandwich Company, Ooltewah, TN, has recalled its chicken and tuna sandwiches sold under the Great American Deli, Granny Green and Lil’Cindy’s labels. The product is distributed in Georgia and in other southeastern state in addition to the mid-west. The sandwiches are sold at retail stores, in vending machines and at wholesales distribution centers.
The five-ounce sandwiches are packaged in triangle shaped clear plastic. The sandwiches recalled have code dates of: Tuna Salad 122, 124, 130 and Chicken Salad 118, 122, 124 and 129.
“I am urging Georgians to be cautious and to be on the look-out for these sandwiches. We don’t want anyone getting sick by mistakenly consuming this product,” said Irvin. “If you purchased a Made-Rite Tuna or Chicken Salad with one of these codes, you should return it to your place of purchase for a full refund.”
According to a Made-Rite press release, “one of our suppliers provided us with an ingredient that was not processed in a manner to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.”
Made-Rite says consumers should not “use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.”
Georgia Department of Agriculture food inspectors are in the process of pulling Made-Rite affected products from retail and distribution outlets.
