Commissioner Irvin Warns Unlisted Almonds

in Candybars May Cause Severe Allergic Reaction

ATLANTA – State Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin warns consumers today that some Belgian Milk Chocolate bars sold at Sam’s Clubs and Wal-Mart stores may contain almonds that are not listed on the label.  People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

Brach’s Confection, Inc., Dallas, TX, has voluntarily recalled its seven-ounce “Sam’s Choice Belgian Milk Chocolate Bars” wrapped in purple paper.  The upper right corner, on the back of the candy bar, displays a “Best By” marker and code D2551A2 December 20, 2006.

“These voluntary recalls are not uncommon but they are important,” said Commissioner Irvin. “When we issue these warnings, it’s vital for the public to take notice.”

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that “undeclared almonds” in the candy bars were being sold at retail outlets. Although “limited in production,” according to Brach officials, the “breakdown in production and packaging” has not produced any “reported illnesses.”

Irvin said that those who have purchased the Brach Belgian Milk Chocolate candy bar can return the recalled product to Sam’s or Wal-Mart for a full cash refund.

Consumers with questions may visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) weblink for the Brach Confection recall, http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/brach03_06.html, or contact Brach at 1-800-283-6303.
