Press Release 11/30/2007 #2
Dr. Black appointed State Veterinarian
Dr. C. Carter Black III will step into the position of State Veterinarian and Assistant Commissioner of Animal Industry in the Georgia Department of Agriculture effective December 15, 2007.
Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin appointed Dr. Black to fill the position being vacated by Dr. Lee Myers, who is leaving for a new job as the first USDA State-Federal Liaison for the National Veterinary Stockpile stationed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“We are fortunate to have someone with Dr. Black’s experience who can take over the job of State Veterinarian,” Irvin said. “He has been involved in monitoring and tracking animal diseases and influencing policy on a national and international level.”
Dr. Black, a 23-year veteran of the Department of Agriculture, currently is the Associate State Veterinarian. He joined the department as assistant state veterinarian after 16 years in private practice.
In the summer of 1989, Irvin appointed Dr. Black as Associate State Veterinarian to oversee the statewide animal health programs. Under Dr. Black’s leadership, Georgia has become free of cattle brucellosis, swine brucellosis and pseudorabies.
In 1996, Dr. Black took a leadership role in supervising the movement, testing and quarantine of the horses involved in the Atlanta Olympic Games. He was especially involved in the development and implementation of the successful Piroplasmosis Control Program and supervised a team of inspectors throughout the period of the games.
The Georgia Cattlemen’s Association last year tapped Dr. Black to receive the group’s “Top Hand Award”, the second person to receive the award. The award is reserved for someone who has gone beyond the call of duty to assist and support the cattlemen’s industry across the state. The special award was created to recognize non-members who have made a significant contribution to the industry outside the role of a producer.
Dr. Black and his wife Linda have a daughter and three grandchildren. The Blacks live in Chattooga County where they are members of Summerville First United Methodist Church. Dr. Black has served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and several other leadership positions in the church.
He has served as past president of the Northwest Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Chattooga County Hospital Authority and is active on several committees and functions of both the Southern and U.S. Animal Health Associations. Dr. Black is a graduate of the 2000 class of the Georgia Agrileaders Forum.
