Irvin deletes dye from pet food proposal

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced that he
is dropping the proposal to add dye to raw milk sold as pet food.
The addition of dye was proposed as a possible amendment to the
rules relating to Georgia Feed Laws and was intended to prevent
any confusion between milk sold for human consumption with
that sold for animal consumption.

“There is an overwhelming consensus that labeling will be sufficient
for consumers to tell the difference between the two kinds of milk.
We will delete the dye proposal and concentrate on labeling.  Everyone
seems to support having clear, recognizable labeling. We will re-
publish the proposed rule changes and hold another hearing in order
to receive public comments,” said Irvin.

A pre-hearing on the proposed rule changes was held this morning
at the State Farmers Market in Atlanta.  Approximately 160-170
people attended and approximately 50 people spoke.  All spoke
against the addition of dye.
