Remainder of Pike County equine to be sold Saturday at state auction

The remainder of the Pike County equine impounded in February will be for sale Saturday in the Georgia Department of Agriculture auction at the Mansfield Equine Impound Facility in Jasper County.

An updated color catalog is available for the auction on the department’s website www.agr.georgia.gov. Viewing equine at the auction begins at 10 a.m., Saturday. The sale begins at noon. The 32 lots (34 animals) to be sold at auction are listed in sale order in the catalog.

"These are some excellent animals that just need good homes," said Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin. "Because of the extended timeframe of the legal proceedings of the Pike County case, our staff has had extra time to work with these animals."

Of the 34 equine to be auctioned, all but seven come from the seizure of nearly 100 horses earlier this year from the Pike County farm. All of the equine available for this auction are listed in the catalog with descriptions of ground manners and riding ability. New terms and conditions of sale are on the last page of the catalog. Auction participants are encouraged to print the catalog and bring it with you.

The Morgan County chapter of the Future Farmers of America will be in charge of the concession sales. Proceeds will be donated to the Equine Impound Program. A silent auction also will be held of donated equine supplies.

The department’s equine impound facility is located at 2834 Marbin Farm Road, Mansfield, GA. For directions, contact the GDA Equine Health Office, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., at 404-656-3713.
