Lawrenceville Shell Mart Given Clearance to Sell Food

Tommy Irvin, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, gave the clearance late this afternoon for Shell Mart, 850 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville, to resume food sales.

The Commissioner had stopped the sale of food from the store on Monday following an inspection that revealed a rodent infestation.

Sanitarians from the Georgia Department of Agriculture re-inspected the store today and reported that problems there had been corrected.

Additionally, Viral Pandya, owner of the store, agreed to the following conditions in a settlement conference with the Department:

• A monetary penalty of $50,000; with $25,000 payable and $25,000 suspended, provided the firm remains in compliance with the Department’s rules and regulations during the probationary period;

• A probationary period of two years with quarterly inspections by the Department;

• Develop and implement a plan of action for controlling pests, including maintaining a current service contract and/or agreement with a licensed pest control company.  Exterminator reports from the pest control company must be available for review by the Department;

• Develop and implement a plan of action to outline proper food storage and handling procedures.
