More horses and donkeys from Pike County case to be sold at auction

The unclaimed horses and donkeys impounded in February by the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) from Pike County will be sold at auction at noon, Saturday, June 2, 2007, at the GDA Equine Facility, 2834 Marbin Farm Road, Mansfield, GA, east of Atlanta in Jasper County.

“These horses have been fully rehabilitated and need loving homes,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin.  “Continuing to hold these animals is not in their best interest.  They need to be with loving families.”

The Department will have the right to monitor these animals for a year after they are sold.  “None of these animals will go back to the owners of the property in Pike County,” said Irvin.

Money from the sale will go into an escrow account and will be held until the legal matters of the Pike County case are resolved. Approximately 50 horses and donkeys are expected to be sold.  The total number will be determined by Friday, June 1.  The animals will be ready for viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the sale day.

The impounded horses and donkeys recovered well.  They are no longer under quarantine. All have undergone examination by a veterinarian and have been released for sale.

Photos and descriptions of the animals are on the Georgia Department of Agriculture website at www.agr.georgia.gov.
