Situation Report #4
Update On Pike County Animal Case

“The animals impounded from Pike County are continuing to receive food, water and veterinary care,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin.

“While the Georgia Department of Agriculture does not have the authority to arrest or file animal cruelty charges, I want the public to know that we will seek a hefty fine regarding violations of the civil statutes we are charged to enforce.  I will also be seeking reimbursement from the owners for the costs for impounding these animals and assuming their care,” said Irvin.

“I am also urging Pike County authorities to press animal cruelty charges against those responsible,” said Irvin.  “However, I ask that the public be patient in order to allow law enforcement officials to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s on this important case.”

“The urgent need is to assure that the animals are fed and cared for until legal proceedings are completed.  A large number of people and organizations have stepped forward with donations and supplies,” said Irvin.  “These people understand the critical situation these animals faced and wanted to do something to help.”
