Situation Report #2
Update On Pike County Animal Case

Georgia Department of Agriculture staff removed 67 horses yesterday from Pike County out of concern for the animals’ health and safety.

The Department is in the process of removing the remaining 27 equine on the property.

The horses are now under shelter and are receiving food, water, supplements and veterinary care. Horses that are showing clinical signs of illness are being isolated from the others.

“I’m happy to report that we have been able to move this large number of animals in such poor condition without any of them dying. That was an initial fear we had because of the critical state we found these in,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin.

The Department is establishing a mechanism to facilitate handling additional supplies and volunteers.  A call center will be available beginning next week.
