Situation Report #1
Update On Pike County Animal Case
Georgia Department of Agriculture staff began removing horses and dogs from a property in Pike County at 10:00 this morning out of concern for the animals’ health and safety.
The process of removing the animals is continuing. The horses will be impounded at a facility leased by the Department. The location is not being disclosed due to security concerns. The dogs will be housed in animal shelters across the state.
“We are unsure at this time how many animals we will have to remove,” said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
“We have received assistance from the Humane Society of the United States, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Cobb County Sheriff’s Department, Mud Creek Ranch, Fayette County Animal Services, Dekalb County Animal Services, Atlanta Humane Society and City of Madison Animal Control,” said Irvin. “We have also received donations from the Petco Foundation and Horsetown to help with the effort. We are grateful to all those who have assisted. This will take a lot of coordination and assistance from our private partners to make sure resources are readily available.”
The Department is establishing a mechanism to facilitate additional supplies and volunteers. A call center will be available beginning next week.
