Farmers' Markets Utilized to Help Ga. Farmers in Obtaining Hay

Although rainfall in late summer and early fall has helped hay production in some parts of Georgia, hay supplies are still in short supply throughout much of the state.  For those farmers that are successful in locating hay, high prices, along with increased transportation costs, have made hay difficult to obtain.  In an effort to help get supplies closer to those farmers in need of hay, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is utilizing its farmer’s market system. State farmers markets will provide space to allow hay producers and/or brokers to sell their hay.  This will provide a centralized location where area farmers can purchase and pick up hay.

“I hope hay producers and sellers will make use of these facilities,” said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.  “This will at least help to get hay supplies closer to those farmers who need it and hopefully help reduce some of their transportation costs.”

Hay producers and/or brokers interested in selling their hay at one of the state farmers markets should call Matt Kulinski, Georgia Department of Agriculture Marketing Division, at 404-656-3680, or call toll-free 1-800-282-5852 and ask for extension 3680.  Farmers may want to contact the state farmers market in their area for hay availability. Following are phone numbers for state farmers markets. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is not responsible for individual transactions between buyers and sellers.
