Georgia Cooking - Old Time Butter Cake

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy in large bowl of electric mixer.  Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Pour mixture into a greased and floured Bundt pan. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes; turn out on wire rack to cool completely. Dust with ½ cup powdered sugar.

Yield: 1-Bundt cake.

Testing note: This is a good basic cake, similar to a pound cake but with a lighter and coarser texture that can be used as a base for strawberry shortcake.
