Plant Protection - Apiary Inspections
The honeybee industry is very important to Georgia's agriculture. Georgia is among the leaders in the U. S., ranking 2nd or 3rd annually, for commercial queen and package bee production. Honeybee pollination is vital to Georgia crops such as watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, and tree fruit. The Plant Protection Division is responsible for inspecting beehives to ensure that all queen bees, package bees, and hives are free of pests and are in good health. Bee health certificates are required by many neighboring states before bees are allowed to be brought into a state or sold by beekeepers. Only beekeepers that ship queens or package bees are required to be licensed by the Plant Protection Division.
