USDA-NRCS Annouces Sign-up For Conservation Security Program

Sign-Up Begins April 18 in Georgia's Broad (River) Watershed

State Conservationist James E. Tillman, Sr. has announced a sign-up for the Conservation Security Program (CSP) in Georgia's Broad (River) Watershed April 18 – May 16.

"This will be the first time that farmers in this watershed will be able to participate in this program," said Tillman. The Broad (River) Watershed is comprised of all or part of the following counties: Banks, Franklin, Madison, Oglethorpe, Elbert, Hart, Wilkes, Lincoln, Clarke, Habersham and Stephens. There are approximately 2,825 potentially eligible farms and ranches in this watershed covering more than 23.7 million acres.

Since the first sign-up in 2004, CSP has offered payments for enhancing natural resources, rewarding those farmers and ranchers who are model conservationists, and providing incentives for other producers to achieve those same high standards of conservation in agriculture.

The sign-up announcement and specific program requirements are being published in the Federal Register.  Information meetings will be held in local communities.  Farmers are encouraged to contact their local District Conservationist for more information.  Information also will be posted on the worldwide web at www.ga.nrcs.usda.gov under Programs.

To apply for CSP, NRCS asks potential participants to complete a CSP self-assessment workbook-available on the Web or from local NRCS offices-to find out if their operation meets the requirements of the program and qualifies for program participation.

CSP is offered on a rotational basis in as many watersheds as funding allows.   Additional information on CSP, including eligible watersheds and a CSP self-assessment workbook, is available at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/csp.
